What's it like?

You would safely install and repair gas heating and hot water systems.You’d maintain and repair the pipes, appliances and meters.

You would work in people’s homes and in businesses like cafes and hotels.

You’d need to check systems carefully to make sure they work or find any problems. You’d follow technical layouts and diagrams.

You would:

  • Install appliances and systems
  • Carry out planned maintenance checks on systems and equipment
  • Test controls and safety devices to make sure that they are working properly
  • Find and repair gas leaks using computerised fault-finding equipment
  • Replace or repair faulty or old parts
  • Order new parts when necessary
  • Keep records of work you have carried out
  • Give customers advice about gas safety and energy efficiency

You’ll be dealing directly with customers in their own homes so you’ll be expected to be polite and friendly.

You would also give customers quotes for jobs and tell them how long they would take. You could also sell additional company services and occasionally deal with complaints.

It’s a responsible job so it’s important that you are aware of safe working practices, industry regulations and environmental guidelines.

Working conditions

Hours

Your working hours would usually be 8am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. You may have to work on a rota if your employer offers 24-hour emergency cover.

Environment

Most of your work would take place in customers’ homes or premises. The job can be physically demanding and may involve working in small, cramped spaces or at heights.

Travel

You would travel to each job. You would usually need a driving licence to transport your equipment.

Qualifications

You would do a Modern Apprenticeship leading to a relevant qualification such as a Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ level 2/3) in:

  • Gas Industry 
  • Domestic Natural Gas Installation and Maintenance
  • Gas Utilisation
  • Or Domestic Plumbing and Heating

Entry requirements for a Modern Apprenticeship vary but employers may ask for qualifications at SCQF level 4/5.

Useful subjects

  • Maths (required by many courses and employers)
  • Science subjects (required by many courses and employers)
  • English
  • Technologies subjects, such as engineering science

You will also need

 Gas Safe Registration once you are in a job.
