Lesson inserts for subject teachers

Bring the world of work to life using lesson inserts in class.

What are lesson inserts?

The importance of linking learning to the world of work is highlighted in the Curriculum for Excellence – in both the principles of curriculum design and the entitlements. It’s further reinforced in Developing the Young Workforce and the Careers Education Standard.

To support you in making these links explicit, we've worked with secondary school teachers across Scotland to develop lesson inserts.

Lesson inserts are short activities which link subject content to relevant labour market information, job profiles and videos on My World of Work.

The use of lesson inserts in class supports many of the entitlements set out in the Career Education Standard, helping your pupils to:

  • Experience a curriculum through which they learn about the world of work and job possibilities and which makes clear the strengths and skills needed to take advantage of these opportunities
  • Know where to find information and access support making effective use of online sources such as My World of Work
  • Develop Career Management Skills as an integral part of their curriculum

Find your subject

Use the tabs above or scroll through the subjects below to find lesson inserts that work for you.

Can't see your subject?

The ambition is to inspire subject teachers in all schools to create their own lesson inserts. My World of Work has all of the up-to-date careers information you need:

  • You can use the subject choice tool to find job profiles (including videos), industries and types of Modern Apprenticeship related to your subject
  • Once you've found some links, you can try creating your own insert using some of the examples below. You can also use our blank lesson insert template to help you get started
