This course is aimed at those looking to start their career in beauty therapy, make-up and nail treatments. It has been designed to introduce and provide a good insight into beauty skills and current industry related treatments whilst you learn a range of treatments that are desired in industry. Once completed, this course prepares students for employment and progression to SVQ Level 2 or Level 6 Beauty.

While undertaking this course you will learn and develop various skills in the following:

· Facial skin care – you will learn about the skin structure, how to identify skin types and how to perform facial cleansing routines whilst selecting appropriate products

· Nail treatments – you will learn about the nail structure, how to perform all aspects of manicure treatments including application of both colour & French polish application. You will also cover nail art techniques such as daisy dot, striping, marbling and applying embellishments.

· Make-up – you will be taught various make-up techniques whilst creating a variety of current looks such as day, bridal & contemporary evening looks

· Throughout the course you will learn and adhere to health and safety in the salon when performing treatments

· You will develop IT skills, use Microsoft Teams & Moodle when accessing learning resources.

· Waxing techniques – you will learn how to apply and remove warm strip wax on the eyebrow, underarm, bikini and half leg.

· Massage techniques – you will learn how to carry out a back, neck and shoulder massage. How to perform the techniques used in industry and the Anatomy of the body.

This is a great course if you are interested in beauty therapy, make-up & nails as it will provide you with a qualification in these areas to help improve employment or progression to other levels in college. Throughout the course there is a variety of learning activities such as lectures, practical demonstrations, portfolio & group work. You will work in a realistic salon environment.

When learning skills, you will do this by initially practicing on each other prior to completing current treatments on clients once confident and competent. You will also have the opportunity to train & use professional skin care brands. Guest speakers are arranged to keep you up to date with current trends and advise of any further training opportunities.

Learning outcome

Education: Progression to SVQ Level 2 or Level 6

Employment: Assistant working in a salon, retail assistant within the beauty therapy industry
