Course description

This programme is delivered over one year and incorporates classroom-based study with work based learning, in order to prepare you for entry to the workplace or fulltime Further or Higher Education.  

Over 400,000 people work in social services and healthcare in Scotland caring for people when they need it most. Whether it’s helping an older person to get ready in the morning to providing nursing and medical care in a hospital setting, a career in the social services and healthcare sector is a as vital as it is rewarding.

The Foundation Apprenticeship in Social Services and Healthcare includes:

  • A National Progression Award (NPA) in Social Services and Healthcare at SCQF level 6
  • Four units of an SCQF level 6 in Social Services and Healthcare
  • A substantial work placement
  • Learning and teaching is a mix between NPA classroom-based teaching integrated with vocational SVQ learning which is contextualised to placement.

    Learning outcome

    Education:

    • Modern Apprenticeship in social services,
    • As the FA is the equivalent of a Higher if accompanied by an additional Higher progression to HNC Healthcare Practice (as long as you also have National 5 Biology or equivalent) or HNC Social Services would be supported.
    • Appropriate University courses as part of additional entry criteria

    Employment:

    • Employment within care services as a support worker/care assistant/health care support workerPlease note this course is to prepare you for a career in health and social care.

  • Must be preparing to start 6th year with a good level of written and spoken English
  • Four National 5s (including English and biology if they want to progress to Nursing)
