This course is offered in conjunction with Morrison Construction and is aimed at those pursuing a career within the construction industry. This is an ideal course if you want to progress to carpentry and joinery apprenticeship programmes. It gives you the chance to use the skills you have developed so far in project work in a realistic working environment.

The course includes bench and site joinery work. Units will include:

  • Principles of building and construction
  • Operating power tools
  • Produce setting out details for bench joinery products
  • Manufacture bench joinery products
  • Finishing techniques
  • You will also develop an increased knowledge of sustainability in construction.

    During the year you will benefit from visits to live construction sites, where you will gain industry insight and complete coursework while there.

    You will have the chance to learn through a structured work experience placement on-site with Morrison Construction, subject to satisfactory attendance and achievement throughout the year.

    Learning outcome

    Education: NC Built Environment/NC Civil Engineering.

    Employment: Apprenticeship in carpentry and joinery, or your preferred trade. Previous students have found apprenticeships with Local authorities, Barrat Developments and JSK Construction Services.

    Entry requirements

    This course is a progression from NPA construction.

    • Relevant practical experience at level 5 (for example practical woodworking or craft skills)
    • Ideally, level 5 communication, numeracy and ICT
    • Those without the above qualifications but with relevant life or work experience are encouraged to apply
    • If English is not your first language, ESOL Level 5 is an entry requirement for this course.
