Course description

From books and magazines to email and the Internet, texts are all around us. As texts of all kinds become more prominent and powerful in our lives, the ability to analyse them and appreciate their often elusive meanings becomes more highly prized. The English Studies degree at Stirling will enable you to recognise ideology and bias, and see through the spin of cultural and political debate. You’ll refine your ability to think and write clearly – valuable skills in many careers and professions. Our graduates are well prepared in these transferable skills and have an excellent success rate in finding rewarding employment in many fields. The English Studies degree at Stirling introduces students to the critical and theoretical study of English, Scottish and American literature. Students have the opportunity to engage with texts from a broad range of historical periods, from the Middle Ages to the present day. There is also a language pathway through the degree, allowing you to study modules in language and linguistics in each semester. At Stirling we approach Spanish as both a European and a global language. There are in excess of 400 million Spanish speakers worldwide, and our courses broaden in-depth understanding of language, societies and cultures across historical and geographical contexts. You’ll explore cultural diversity in modern-day Spain and Latin America, through contemporary and classic films, literature and media. As Spanish students you will be taught by tutors and lecturers who specialise in the complexities of Spain and Latin America. Our highly experienced language teachers work to provide in-depth language study throughout your degree. You will not only develop high-level written and spoken linguistic skills, but you will also build an understanding of the histories, societies, literature, cinema and visual cultures of Spain and Latin America. You’ll be taught through a combination of lectures and small tutorial groups, with access to our state-of-the-art range of language learning resources through our virtual learning environment and our campus language labs. As a student of Spanish at Stirling you will have a number of opportunities to spend time living, studying and working abroad as part of your degree. On many degrees, you will spend Semester 6 studying abroad at one of our partner universities. We are constantly renewing and expanding our partnerships and they currently include universities in Spain, Chile, Argentina and Mexico. You might also be interested in one of the University’s study exchange programmes, thanks to which you could spend time studying in a wide range of overseas universities, such as, for instance, Anchorage (Alaska) or Sydney (Australia). You might also decide to apply for an English Language Assistantship which would allow you to undertake paid teaching in schools across the Spanish-speaking world. For Education students, this fulfils the Graduate Teaching Council’s residence requirement but it is an opportunity open to all students on all Languages courses. Students who take up these opportunities consistently comment on the positive aspects of the experience which helps develop language skills, cultural awareness and employability.
