Course description

Do you see yourself working in a business environment? This degree will provide you with a strong knowledge base, skills and competencies to form a foundation from which managerial expertise can develop throughout your working life. The University of Stirling Management School has been awarded a Bronze Charter by the Small Business Charter in recognition of its active participation in supporting local economies through its work with start- ups and small businesses. Stirling Management School is committed to a research-led approach in all of its activities with all of our outputs being rated at an international level, and an impressive proportion deemed to be world leading. The Business Studies degree is highly rated. Our teaching staff are active in various areas of current management research. Research, therefore, informs their teaching, making it relevant to current debates within business. French at Stirling is focused on high quality research-led teaching of the language and cultures of the contemporary French-speaking world. Our courses give students an in-depth understanding of language, society and thought across historical and geographical contexts, as well as an opportunity to spend time abroad at a range of exciting partner institutions. Our graduates are dynamic, motivated and flexible. They bring their high-level skills in written and oral communication, translation and intercultural awareness to a wide range of professional contexts. As Language students you will be taught by tutors and lecturers who specialise in the complexities of cultures in places as diverse as metropolitan France, Quebec, the Maghreb and sub-Saharan Africa. And our Language Coordinators, who are highly experienced in the teaching of French as a foreign language, work in close collaboration with our team of Language Assistants to provide in-depth language study throughout your degree. Your degree in French will not only enable you to develop high-level written and spoken linguistic skills, but you will also build an understanding of the histories, societies, literature, cinema and visual cultures of the French-speaking world. You’ll be taught through a combination of lectures and small tutorial groups, with access to our state-of-the-art range of language learning resources through our virtual learning environment and our campus language labs. As a student of French at Stirling you will have a number of opportunities to spend time living, studying and working abroad as part of your degree. On many degrees, you will spend Semester 6 studying abroad at one of our partner universities. We are constantly renewing and expanding our partnerships and they currently include universities across France, as well as in Quebec, Switzerland and Morocco. You might also decide to apply for an English Language Assistantship which would allow you to undertake paid teaching in a school in France or elsewhere in the Francophone world. For Education students, this fulfils the Graduate Teaching Council’s residence requirement but it is an opportunity open to all students on all Languages courses. Students who take up these opportunities consistently comment on the positive aspects of the experience which helps develop language skills, cultural awareness and employability.
