Course description

MODERN LANGUAGES - At Stirling, we approach French and Spanish as both European and global languages. There are around 250 million French speakers and in excess of 400 million Spanish speakers worldwide, and our courses give students a broad understanding of language, society and thought across historical and geographical contexts. You’ll explore cultural diversity in modern-day France and/or Spain, through contemporary and classic films, literature, graphic novels and up-to-date media, as well as studying the wider French and Spanish-speaking worlds. As Languages students you will be taught by tutors and lecturers who specialise in the complexities of cultures in places as diverse as Quebec, Central and Latin America, the Maghreb and sub-Saharan Africa, as well as Spain and France. And our Language Coordinators, who are highly experienced in the teaching of French and Spanish as foreign languages, work in close collaboration with our team of Language Assistants to provide in-depth language study throughout your degree.
You will develop high-level written and spoken linguistic skills in French and Spanish, as well as building an understanding of the histories, societies, literature, cinema and visual cultures of these language areas. You’ll be taught through a combination of lectures and small tutorial groups, with access to our state-of-the-art range of language learning resources through our virtual learning environment and our campus language labs.
As a Languages student at Stirling you will have a number of opportunities to spend time living, studying and working abroad as part of your degree.
You will spend Semester 6 studying abroad at one of our many partner universities. We are constantly renewing and expanding our network of partnerships and they currently include universities in Argentina, France, Spain, Chile, Quebec, Switzerland, Mexico and Morocco.
You may also decide to apply for an English Language Assistantship which would allow you to undertake paid teaching in schools across the French and Spanish-speaking worlds.
Students of both French and Spanish will be required to fulfil our minimum residence requirement for their second language in order to graduate. This can occur via a competitive Language Assistants scheme or via a four-week residence at a language school (at the student’s own expense).
Students who take up these opportunities consistently comment on the positive aspects of the experience which helps develop language skills, cultural awareness and employability. BUSINESS STUDIES -
