Course description

Infectious disease is a major challenge to society in the developed and developing worlds.

Our infectious diseases programme investigates the microorganisms that cause disease in humans and animals and how a host responds to infection. It brings together the study of:

* bacteriology

* virology

* immunology

* molecular biology

You will study:

* the interaction between microorganisms and hosts

* infection processes

* how microbes cause disease

We can apply this knowledge to the development of prevention and therapeutic strategies, such as:

* antibiotics

* antiviral agents

* vaccines

Entry requirements

Scottish Higher minimum entry requirements: A,A,B,B

AABB by the end of S5 or AAAB by end of S6. BBB must be achieved in one year of S4-S6. Required subjects: Highers: Biology and Chemistry at B. Higher Mathematics or Physics and Advanced Higher Biology and Chemistry are recommended. National 5s: Mathematics at B and English at C.
