We live and work in a world that is linguistically and culturally diverse meaning there is a demand for strong linguists with a combination of interpreting and translating skills to support the growing complexity of international communication. Master a set of marketable skills to a professional standard with this flexible programme which offers to develop your understanding and application of translation and interpreting theories and techniques as well as equips you with expertise in conference and public service interpreting.
This programme aims to build on students' existing language skills transforming strong linguists into highly employable translators and interpreters, providing the extensive professional skills required to meet the needs of the translation and interpreting industry.
Students will be given the opportunity to work with Mandarin, from and into English, whilst specialising in translation and interpreting, opening the way to specific careers such as conference and public service interpreting, professional in-house or freelance translators and interpreters. The programme strengthens your linguistic skill set giving you exciting opportunities to work in sectors including education, marketing and business.
**Please note:** This programme starts in January 2021. Mandarin is the only language being offered for January 2021. We are working on adding a suite of modern languages to choose from in our curriculum.

Entry requirements
Candidates are required to have a First or Upper Second class honours degree or its overseas equivalent in one of the languages offered in the School of Language, Literature, Music and Visual Culture, or a 2.2 with professional experience in interpreting (candidates with substantial experience as a professional interpreter but no degree will also be considered). Students need to have a very good command of the two languages (Chinese and English) that they will be using to acquire their interpreting skills. In the case of English, students must be able to demonstrate English language competence at IELTS 6.5. level (or equivalent), preferably having in Listening and Speaking 6.0.
