Course details

Course description

History and Politics at Aberdeen is a great combination to add to your wide and deep study of all aspects of human activity in the past with a fascinating exploration of national, European and global politics. You will be taught by highly-regarded experts regularly commenting in the media on events unfolding in the world today and gain the perfect foundation for a wide range of careers in Europe, politics, media and many other fields and professions.

History research at Aberdeen is rated top in Scotland for its impact and 2nd in the UK in the latest UK Research Excellence Framework (as ranked by Times Higher Education based on REF 2014 GPA scores), with teaching rated ‘Highly Satisfactory’ in the last national quality assessment and student satisfaction of 95%. You will be enthused and inspired by teachers who are leaders in their fields, with expertise as diverse as medieval Scandinavia, early-modern Poland and modern East Asia and enthralled by our wonderful collections of historic treasures collected by distinguished alumni over the centuries.

In Politics, you will be right at the front of debate on current world events – including Britain’s relationship with the European Union and its neighbours on mainland Europe and movements of regionalisation within the UK. You will explore voting behaviour, different political systems, making and implementing policy, nationalism, concepts of democracy and ever-present concerns of conflict and peace. You can also take advantage of unique options made possible by the research pedigree of our academic team with a strong track record in publishing international papers and articles. The knowledge and combination of academic, analytical and intellectual skills you will develop and their transferability will be a great foundation for a career in politics, international organisations, local and national and local government, NGOs, charities and much more.
