Course description

The effective use of information technology underpins the administrative function of any organisation, with word processing as the most utilised function. This Unit will be relevant to those who are interested in a career in administration, with a particular focus in document production and presentation. It will prepare you for producing the standard of document required by today’s business world, and will build your skills in both familiar and unfamiliar contexts, developing the skills and knowledge needed to use word processing and presentation packages to aid business communications. On completion of you should be able to: Produce business documents using word processing software. Perform a mail merge Evaluate the impact of current legislation in relation to information and equipment Create a business presentation using presentation software 2 HN credits at SCQF level 7: (16 SCQF credit points at SCQF level 7) You will study four main outcomes: Outcome 1 develops the skills required to use word processing functions to create and present a range of business documents to meet an agreed house style and to be of a business-like standard in terms of language and presentation. Outcome 2 develops the skills required to use mail merge as an efficient and effective way of producing mass correspondence to meet specific criteria. Outcome 3 develops your knowledge of the relevant legislation regulating the security and confidentiality of information and equipment in the working environment. Outcome 4 develops your skills to create business-like presentations using presentation software. To complete this course you must undertake three written assessments which are undertaken under Open Book Controlled Conditions. This means that you can use your notes in accordance with the rules of the assessment. Your Tutor will mark your all your certified assessments. Any re-submissions, known as remediation, will also be directed and remarked by your tutor. Your work will then be cross-marked by an in college subject expert, a process called moderation. It is only then that a result can be sent to the Awarding Body for certification. A pass is not final until all cross-checking procedures have been successfully completed. Your pass will be notified to the SQA for certification.

Entry requirements

It would be beneficial if you have achieved a relevant word processing qualification or have recent, relevant work experience. All students are assigned a login to Microsoft Office 365 which includes online access to Microsoft Word 2016 at no extra cost. There are two costs associated with this course: The first presentation for £ 274.00 includes the cost of SQA registration. The second presentation for £260.00 is without the cost of SQA registration. “Please see www.nescol.ac.uk for course without SQA Registration fee” This course requires you to manage your workload independently, and will involve attendance at a campus or centre - often for assessment purposes only.
