Course description

This is an optional Unit in the National Certificate Group Award: Early Education and Childcare (Higher) - it is useful for people wishing to study a variety of other subjects, including health and social care, and can be studied on its own by those with a particular interest in developing their knowledge and understanding of issues related to HIV, AIDS and Hepatitis B and C infections.  The Unit is accredited by the SQA and on completion you will gain 1 credit at Higher level (equivalent to SCQF Level 6). For further information on this course, please visit the SQA website. Important information This course will explore the signs, symptoms and possible progression of each infection. You will also examine the effects of prejudice and discrimination on individuals who have these infections, and think about way of challenging this. Finally, you will investigate how people with the infection can use support services to promote their well-being. Overall you will develop a good level of knowledge and understanding regarding the ways in which HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C are spread, and how to prevent them spreading. Exams There are two assessed pieces of work that need to be completed.  One is a case study that you will need to submit to your tutor and the other is a one hour long written assessment that to needs to be invigilated.  We offer regular assessment sessions so whether it be daytime or evening you will find something suitable for you.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry qualifications for this course, but you will benefit from work experience in a child, health or social care setting.  Completion of one of the following would also be an advantage: Qualification(s) at National 5, Intermediate 2 or Standard Grade at Credit level, or successful completion of a course or unit in care at Intermediate 2 Scottish Group Award at Intermediate 2  SVQ or SVQ units at level 2 in a related subject This unit provides a key progression route between education and employment (or further study/training leading to employment) for anyone interested in the care profession. This course requires you to manage your workload independently with tutor support which would be available via email and telephone. You would be assigned contact details and guidelines for your tutor once enrolled on course. You will have access to all the student support online services via the college website.
