Course description
A detailed study of pneumatic and hydraulic systems.
Pneumatic and hydraulic systems are used extensively in industry – mechanical technicians and incorporated engineers should therefore have knowledge, understanding and skills in using these systems.
This is a mandatory Unit within the HNC/HND Mechanical Engineering Group Award. It may also be part of other Group Award or taken as a single HN Unit. It has been designed to give you a thorough understanding of the operation and maintenance requirements of pneumatic and hydraulic systems, and is particularly suitable for those who are training to become mechanical technicians or incorporated engineers.
Credit points and level: 1 HN credit at SCQF level 7: (8 SCQF credit points at SCQF level 7)
What you will experienceAs you work through the content you will be provided with lots of opportunity to design, assemble and test either a pneumatic or hydraulic system and to develop fault finding skills on a practical or simulated fluid power system containing faults.
The Unit is likely to be delivered within a practical laboratory environment, where you will be provided with the opportunity to undertake a significant amount of hands-on, practical work. Health and safety will be emphasised throughout, and the unit will be assessed on an outcome by outcome basis:
Entry requirements
It would be an advantage to have achieved one of the following HN units:
- Engineering Principles
- Thermofluids
- Engineering Drawing
- Materials Selection
However, completion of one of these units is not absolutely essential.
