Course description

Providing you with the practical skills and clinical knowledge needed to pursue a career in the healthcare sector.

The purpose of this course is to prepare our future healthcare professionals to thrive within today’s health and social care services. You will be provided with the skills, knowledge and critical ability to provide person-centred care. You will mainly work with people over the age of 16. This will include working with individuals, families and communities to promote health and well-being, prevention of ill health and enabling people to maintain and improve their mental and physical health. You will be expected to support individuals through all stages of the life cycle including end-of-life and palliative care.

This course has two routes. Please state in the ‘Tell us your story so far’ section of the application process which you are interested in:

  • Non-Degree Link route
  • For those intending to apply for Year 1 of a Paramedic Practice, Midwifery or Children and Young People’s nursing degree on completing the course.

  • Degree Link route
  • For those wishing to articulate into Year 2 of an Adult or Mental Health nursing degree at RGU, or a Learning Disabilities nursing degree at Edinburgh Napier University after the course.

    What you will experience
  • Clinical Skills for Care Practitioners: Clinical skills such as basic observations, injection techniques and wound care which prepares you for practical at placement
  • Graded Unit: A project, in the form of an investigation, which is used to assess the application of all your knowledge and skills gained during your HNC
  • Human Body in Health and Illness: Gives you an understanding of the human body and how it functions
  • Mental Health and Mental Illness: Investigate prevalence of MH and gain an understanding of different types of illness
  • Professional Standards for Care Practice: Insight into your values and investigates NMC codes
  • Safe Working Practice for Care: Examines legislation and relevance in nursing
  • Sociology and Health in Scotland: Explores societies impact on health decision people make and learn about sociological theories
  • Therapeutic Relationships: Helps you understand about communication and the importance of this, help you understand the link between your client and psychological theory
  • Understanding Personal and Professional Development: Enables you to be more reflective and resilient.
  • Placements

    Non-Degree Link route (progression to Paramedic Practice, Midwifery or Children and Young People Nursing degree programmes)

    As a NESCol student you will have to undertake up to 360 hours of placement practice. This may include shift work. Please note there will be no specific Paramedic Practice, Childrens or Midwifery placements. You will be placed in a healthcare placement in a hospital or community setting working mainly with adults. This is to provide you with the experience required for entry to Year 1 of your chosen degree.

    Degree Link route (progression to Adult Nursing, Mental Health Nursing or Learning Disabilities Nursing degree programmes)

    As a NESCol student, you will have to undertake 720 hours of placement practice. This will include day shift, night shift and weekends. Your placements will be over a range of nursing areas such as adult, mental health, communities and learning disabilities. This Degree Link course is delivered in association with RGU, Edinburgh Napier University and NHSG.

    NESCol has a strong partnership with RGU, Edinburgh Napier University and NHSG and, as such, this route is subject to a tri-party interview process.

    University

    Non-Degree Link route (progression to Paramedic Practice, Midwifery or Children and Young People Nursing degree programmes)

    This route enables students to apply for a place at RGU for Year 1 of BSc Paramedic Practice, Year 1 of BSc Midwifery and Year 1 of BSc Children and Young People Nursing.

    You can also apply for Year 1 of the BSc Adult or Mental Health Nursing degree following this route.

    Please note that entry to these degree programmes are not automatic or guaranteed. You will have to apply as an independent candidate and will be subject to the normal university shortlisting and interview process.

    Degree Link route (progression to Adult Nursing, Mental Health Nursing or Learning Disabilities Nursing degree programmes)

    This course enables students to gain automatic entry into Year 2 of RGU Adult or Mental Health Nursing (BSc) degree or Year 2 Learning Disabilities (BSc) degree at Edinburgh Napier University.

    On completing this course, you may wish to apply for a place at a university not listed above. This will generally be for entry at Year 1 of a degree course or, at the discretion of the university, for entry at Year 2 for Adult, Mental Health and Learning Disabilities nursing. (Please note that it is your responsibility to check the entry requirements with your chosen university prior to submitting an application).

    Entry requirements

    • Two Highers (at grade C or above), one of which should be in science, preferably Biology
    • Level 6 Health or Social Care course along with Higher Care at grade C or above

    Other requirements:

    • If English is not your first language, you will be required to have IELTS (International English Language Testing Skills) at 7.0 or Cambridge English Score of 185.
    • A clear PVG will be required prior to placement allocation. This will be organised by the College, however you will have to pay for the PVG.
    • Fitness to practice – you must meet the standards of character, conduct and competence required to undertake your placement safely as outlined in NMC Codes and SSSC.
    • You must undertake a Moving & Handling course and Dealing with Violence & Aggression course before commencing placement. This will be organised by the College.
    • If you have a health issue which you may require a risk assessment or adaptations you must let us know so the necessary risk assessments can be completed prior to placement.
    • You must make an appointment at your GP practice for HepB Vaccination; this is free for anyone who may be at risk, which includes health care workers. You must provide evidence that this has been undertaken.
