Course description

This course is specifically designed to give you the academic and practical training needed to support  IT systems or develop websites and applications.

This course is designed to give you an introduction to computer hardware and software. During this course you will learn the basics of networking, software development and cyber security.

Learn about the current and emerging trends in computing, the professional bodies that govern computing and the benefits of joining one of these professional bodies.

You will also learn how to be a professional and competent individual in computer hardware or software and cyber security and the impact of the current legislation such as GDPR.

Please note: cyber security elements are taught at Aberdeen City Campus only.

What you will experience

Topics covered during the course include:

  • Computer hardware, networking and software development
  • Troubleshooting computer problems
  • Project management and team working
  • Undertake an ethical hacking project assuming the role of a cyber security specialist as you test software or hardware/networks for vulnerabilities (Aberdeen only)
  • At Fraserburgh Campus, these topics will be covered:

  • Introduction to software development with Python and Java programming
  • Troubleshooting computer problems
  • Undertake project management and team working activities
  • Database and SQL
  • Cisco IT Essentials and CCNA: Introduction to Networks
  • NextGen qualifications allow more time in class focusing on larger, fewer subjects in more depth, increasing learning time, integrating learning, teaching and assessment approaches which reduces the assessment load. The traditional Graded Unit is also replaced with a Project and Portfolio that students work on throughout the year allowing students to develop and showcase their own work to Universities and potential employers.

    NextGen courses offer more than just the specific subjects, they are designed to develop the individuals Meta Skills, the skills to thrive in an ever changing environment, developing self management, social intelligence and innovation.

    Learning outcome

    HNC Computing (SCQF Level 7).

    This is a SQA NextGen course.

    NextGen is a new approach to Higher National qualifications introduced by the SQA and designed to be adaptable and flexible to respond to the needs of the employment market.

    Entry requirements

    • Two Highers at Grade C or above, preferably including Computing Science
    • Students progressing from Advanced Computing at SCQF Level 6 can also gain entry to this course.
    • Core Skills (Numeracy and Communications) at SCQF Level 5 are also required.
