Analogue Electronic Principles

North East Scotland College

Course details

Course description

This course will develop your knowledge, understanding and skills in analogue electronic devices and circuits.

This is a mandatory Unit within the HNC/HND Electronics Group Awards, or may be taken as single HN Unit. It has been designed to give you the skills needed to progress to more advanced units in analogue electronics, and can be used as a stand-alone unit in analogue electronics for those who do not wish to advance their studies beyond SCQF Level 7 (HNC). Other engineering students who wish to broaden their knowledge can also use it.

HNC/HND candidates will have the opportunity to improve their knowledge of discrete and integrated circuit semiconductor devices that are widely used in electronic circuits.

By the end of the Unit you will be competent in the understanding of a wide range of analogue electronic devices, be able to interpret data sheets and will have gained valuable practical skills in the handling and testing of components and circuits. You will be able to recognise the relationship between theory and practice – for example, how the use of computer simulation will allow you to analyse circuit operation before carrying out the practical work.

Credit points and level: 2 HN credit at SCQF level 7: (16 SCQF credit points at SCQF level 7)

What you will experience

You will study four main outcomes:

Outcome 1 will introduce you to a wide range of discrete semiconductor devices used in electronic circuits. This will give you a good knowledge and understanding of how to operate these devices.

Outcomes 2 and 3 allow you to understand the practical applications of the discrete devices studied in the first outcome. You will also gain experience in computer simulation and practical work.

Outcome 4 will cover the operational amplifier, which is widely used in analogue linear circuits to perform mathematical operations including addition and subtraction.
