Course description
An advanced qualification to prepare you for further study or employment in 3D computer animation.
The HND 3D Computer Animation course will provide you with the technical and creative skills needed for a career in the animation industry. Students will explore a range of topics such as character design and modelling, environmental modelling, special effects, compositing and motion graphics. Using industry-standard software and equipment students will learn the technical process of animation – from design, storyboarding, modeling and animating, through to the final editing process.
Students will have an opportunity to learn 3Ds Max, After Effects, Photoshop, traditional drawing, character design, storyboarding, animation principles and techniques to create a wide range of animation.
What you will experienceYou will focus on specific aspects of the industry such as:
• Traditional drawing skills
• Storyboarding
• Character animation and modelling
• Texturing
• Surfacing
• 2D animation and motion graphics
• Special effects
• Editing
You will have to provide your own A3 workbooks and backup storage device. You may also wish to have an A3 portfolio case for storing/carrying your work.
Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)
This course is a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) programme. This means that you are required to have access to your own laptop computer, netbook or similar device in class each day that you are in college.
If you do not already own a suitable device you can apply for a student loan from SAAS, if eligible, to fund the cost of purchasing a device.

Entry requirements
- Two Highers or equivalent.
- Appropriate Level 6 course.
- For those returning to education, life skills and experience may allow entry.
- Advanced entry directly to year 2 with 15 credits from HNC 3D Computer Animation.
