Course description

The Foundation Apprenticeship in Mechanical Engineering aims to give students the opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge to enter into a career in engineering and the advanced manufacturing sector and other engineering related industries. The programme is designed to provide participants with theory, practice and related work experience.

Engineering enterprises in Scotland employ over 144,000 people across 12,000 establishments. Scotland accounts for about 8% of engineering employment in the UK. In terms of employment by sector: 24,000 are employed in metals, 50,100 in consultancy, testing and analysis, 10,000 in electronics, 21,400 in mechanical equipment, 4500 in aerospace and 14,900 in research and development, with the remaining 17,100 in other related industrial groups.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements for this course include:

  • Students must have gained National 5 Maths, English and another relevant subject (A-C) by end of S4. 
  • Students must be studying a minimum or more Highers in S5.
  • Students must be entering S5 and fully committed to studying a Foundation Apprenticeship over 2-years.
  • Students must have an interest developing greater awareness of the industry and a strong desire to work in the sector.
