Course description
The HNC in Construction Management develops knowledge and skills in areas such as building measurement and cost studies, building science, building services, construction materials and specifications, as well as health and safety in construction. Candidates will gain contemporary vocational skills including study, research, analysis, planning and organisational skills. They will also learn to take responsibility for their own learning, developing abilities to be flexible and work co-operatively with others. The course is taught within a classroom environment with practical experience gained from workshops, field trips and site visits. *Please note that the part-time and evening course runs over two years with a separate course for each year* What you will learn You will gain knowledge, understanding and skills in a variety of construction disciplines which will prepare you for further study or employment in the construction industry including: Construction Materials and Specifications Building Measurement and Cost Studies Building Science Construction Technology: Industrial/Commercial Superstructure Building Services: An Introduction 2D CAD (Computer Aided Design) Health and Safety in Construction Standard Forms of Construction Contracts Construction Site Surveying Building Services in Large Buildings Site Administration Construction Technology: Substructure Mathematics for the Built Environment Structural Mechanics Construction Management: Graded Unit 1 Progression Education: Learners who achieve an HNC Construction Management may progress on to HND Construction Management, Building Surveying, Computer Aided Architectural Design and Technology, and Quantity Surveying. Successful students may also have the opportunity to progress to university construction degree courses (direct entry into year 2). Employment: Possible progression to a supervisory or technician post in the construction industry. Higher National qualifications also provide the knowledge and understanding required for related Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs). The HNC Construction Management provides a range of skills which support learning in the SVQ 3 and SVQ 4 Construction: Technical Modern Apprenticeship Frameworks. Careers: You might work as a technician, or trainee site manager in the built environment and construction sector – architectural technology, quantity surveying, estimating, building surveying and construction management.
Entry requirements
Minimum entry requirements One Higher at Grade C or above including Mathematics or a Science subject National Qualification at SCQF level 6 in Built Environment An SVQ in Construction or a related discipline Other equivalent qualifications or experience Additional selection requirements You will be invited for a group and/or individual interview where you will get the opportunity to find out more about the course and tell us why you're interested in this subject area.
