Course description

The Access to Nursing Degree (Care) is a full-time course (21 hours/week) over one year and is part of the Scottish Wider Access Programme (SWAP).

This course is for you have life experience skills and you are wishing to return to education with the objective of building a career in Nursing, and if you have few or no qualifications and have been out of education for a minimum of 5 years.

What you will learn

Course units include:

  • Values & Principles in Care
  • Social influences
  • Stress and stress Management
  • Human Development and behaviour
  • The Human Body
  • Mental Health and Mental Illness
  • First aid
  • HIV Infection
  • Core skills such as Communications Higher, and Numeracy.

Candidates will be assessed using essays, class-based exams and presentations.

Learning outcome

You can progress to HNC Healthcare Practice at Glasgow Kelvin College.

You can also progress to undergraduate in Learning Disability, Paediatric, Adult and Mental Health Nursing at Glasgow Caledonian University, Stirling University and University of West of Scotland.

Entry requirements

  • Whilst there are no formal qualifications required, you must have good written and spoken communication skills.
  • You must have been out of formal education for a minimum of 5 years.
  • Applicants will be assessed through their personal statement and be invited in for interview based on the personal statement as part of the recruitment process
  • Where English is not your first language Higher ESOL or equivalent is necessary.
  • If you do not meet the entry criteria for your chosen course, you may be offered an alternative course in a similar subject area.

    You need to provide a comprehensive personal statement with your application which MUST include the following:

  • Why you wish to study the access programme
  • What field of nursing do you wish to enter and why?
  • What do you think are the things patients are most concerned about when being treated medically?
  • Give an example of a time within your personal life and/or work life where you have dealt with a challenging situation. How did you respond to this, what was the outcome, and what would you do differently if faced with this situation again?
  • Include the skills, qualities and attributes you believe you have that would make you the right person to work in your chosen field.
