Course description

From digital audio/video systems to wireless sensor networks, the internet of things, and from engine management systems in automotive environments to renewable energy, electrical and electronic engineers have been responsible for the designs to allow these technological advancements. Rapid advancements in communications, sensor technologies, robotics, and high-speed electronics, combined with newer technologies such as machine learning and computer vision will continue to revolutionise the world we live in. Our programmes allow you to take your place in the fast-paced world of electrical and electronic systems design.

Our programmes allow you to gain the essential knowledge and experience to create products and systems with electronics and communication technologies at their heart with the Digital Systems and Telecommunications route, or to branch into the electronic control of mechanical and intelligent robotic systems with the Mechatronics route.

A common first year provides students the opportunity to develop key electrical and electronic skills and gain a sufficient understanding of the available specialist areas, before proceeding in their chosen route. Wherever possible we employ hands-on project work to develop practical and problem-solving skills.

In the final year students undertake a major individual project that is either linked to research work within the department e.g. condition monitoring in power systems, computer vision on improved next generation wireless networks, or, potentially, projects based on industry relevant design activity e.g. motor control hardware and software to propel and steer an intelligent car or sensor design for next generation Internet of Things. Subject to satisfactory performance it is possible to continue onto the technically deeper MEng route.

Entry requirements

Scottish HNC minimum entry requirements: Pass

Year 2 Entry: 15 credit HNC Electrical or Electronic Engineering with B in the Graded Unit including Engineering Mathematics 1, 2, 3 and 4. Attendance and pass at Maths Summer School is essential for those without at least Engineering Maths 3 and 4. Knowledge of principles of programmable systems is desirable (units such as DG59 34: MCU/MPU Assembly Language Programming, DG58 34: High Level Engineering Software)

Scottish HND minimum entry requirements: Pass

Year 3 Entry: HND Electronics/Electrical Engineering must include Maths for Engineering Units part 1, 2 & 3 or Engineering Mathematics 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5 with B in the Graded Units. Attendance and pass at Maths Summer School is essential for those without at least Maths for Engineering 3 or Engineering Maths 5. Knowledge of principles of programmable systems (one or two of the following units is required: DG5A 35: High Level Language: External I/O Transfer, DG5C 35: MCU/MPU I/O Hardware Control. Any of the following units is desirable: DG52 35: Programmable Logic Devices, DG4X 35 Microprocessor and Microcontroller Technology). Offer holders without Programmable Systems units in their HND can still gain entry to Year 3 but need to attend Programmable Skills sessions at GCU.

Scottish Higher minimum entry requirements: B,B,C,C

including HL Maths plus a Science or Technology Subject at HL 4
