Course description

The HNC in Poultry Production Systems is designed to develop your knowledge and skills in poultry production such that you can work in a variety of roles within the poultry industry, such as a poultry farm manager, hatchery manger, or feed mill manager. Primarily, the programme focuses on various aspects of poultry biology and production methods, while including essential IT skills training, information on poultry buildings and environment, and business management.

The programme is made up of nine mandatory units (of various credit points, depending on the length of their delivery. Each unit is assessed using a variety of methods such as quizzes, presentations, and written work, based on realistic scenarios that you might encounter in the workplace.

In the final phase of the course, you will undertake a longer project-based, case study assignment to demonstrate your ability to collate your prior learning into a single, more complex task.

The course is taught by specialists and is entirely online, meaning that you can fit it around your existing work and home life.

Note: Please note that students undertaking this course who are domiciled out with Scotland the qualification title is Advanced Certificate Poultry Production Systems. This is a requirement of the awarding body, SQA (Scottish Qualifications Authority). SRUC can assure you that the content and qualification level of the HNC and Advanced Certificate are exactly the same.

The Higher National Certificate in Poultry Production Systems is designed to provide you with the necessary background in the major aspects of production in the commercial poultry sector in the UK. You will gain skills and knowledge in poultry biology (e.g. physiology, health, welfare, embryology, nutrition) and methods of production by using a range of dynamic learning methods and assessment, designed to reflect authentic practice in the field. The programme will also develop your academic skills in critical thinking and searching for relevant information.

Entry requirements

Two Highers (CC) including a science subject.

National 5 (Grade A-C) in Maths, English and a Science subject.

Relevant NC at SCQF level 5 or 6 in an animal care or animal science topic.

Work experience at a poultry production facility or with back yard poultry would be beneficial.
