Course description

The National Progression Award (NPA) will introduce you to the field of criminology, including its history andf the role of the media in reporting crime. You will also be introduced to the physical and psychological evidence available at a crime scene and will develop an understanding of how the criminal justice system operates.

The nature of criminology is challenging and includes sensitive topics such as domestice violence and sexual abuse. Learners must consider the suitability of this course for them.  

What you will learn

Criminology: Crime in the community - this unit will explore how crime is being addressed in local communities through policy and the criminal justice system

Criminology: Crime scenes - this unit will develop an understanding of the different types of physical evidence available at a crime scene, the importance of preserving evidence and how this evidence is utilised. You will also develop an understanding of psychological evidence available at a crime scene and how that information can be used to understand the scene.

The History and Development of Criminology - this unit will introduce you to the historical development of criminology as an academic discipline. You will develop an understanding of the theories concerning the nature of crime and the criminal throughout time.

Learning outcome

Achievement of the NPA Criminology Level 5 could contribute towards progression onto the NPA in Criminology Level 6 which is offered to SCP students.

The award may also contribute towards progression to a full-time college courses in social sciences at Level L6.  

This award is a stepping stone to a range of careers such as:

  • Local/national government
  • Policing
  • Criminal justice system
  • Forensic psychology
