Course description

To apply for a place on the course students must submit an external course application through the Edinburgh college website www.edinburghcollege.ac.uk. The additional credits are delivered as distance learning mode of study. The unit should take approximately 10 weeks to complete. Once enrolled, students will be given access to the online student portal to access the course materials and contact details of a designated tutor to contact for support while engaged in learning This Unit is designed to enable learners to gain an awareness of how to manage and support children and young people’s behaviour. The learner will gain knowledge and understanding of the theoretical approaches and factors that influence behaviour which will enable them to support children and young people’s behaviour in practice. This Unit will also enable learners to explore strategies to support a range of behaviours including additional support needs. On successful completion of the Unit the learner will be able to: 1 Analyse and evaluate current theory in relation to behaviour and apply to practice. 2 Explain a range of factors that influence children and young people’s behaviour. 3 Analyse and evaluate a range of strategies employed by the learner and other professionals in the support of children and young people’s behaviour including additional support needs. Students will receive online support and can contact their tutor by phone or email.

Entry requirements

Students are required to meet one of the following: A minimum of two Highers (one of which should be English) or pass in a relevant NC at SCQF Level 6 or SVQ Level 2 Children’s Care Learning and Development/Social Services Children and Young People. Or a qualification at or above SCQF 6 that demonstrates ability in research, essay writing and reports, together with experience of working with children. Note; applicants with significant experience of working with children will also be considered please detail this in your personal statement. To obtain entry to these units you should be: Working or volunteering on a regular basis in a Childhood Practice Setting and have a PVG for this setting. Hold a registerable award for Practitioner Level as detailed by the SSSC. On completion students can progress onto either further study options could include degree-level courses such as PDA Childhood Practice at Level 9 or the PDA Childhood Practice at SCFQ 8 or the BA Childhood Practice or roles in leadership roles in childcare settings, senior practitioners in nurseries. As the units are delivered online, applicants should be confident in using IT to access the course and will be provided a designated tutor to contact via email. All successful applicants will be sent information from the admission team on payment methods and the course information booklet along with an explanatory email about how to access the course materials and designated tutor contact information.
