Course description

This programme comprises units in Numeracy, Finance and Statistics and Geometry.  The entire course is exam based, typically in early May as stipulated by SQA.

The purpose of the Applications of Mathematics National Award @ SCQF Level 5 course is to motivate and challenge candidates by enabling them to think through real-life situations involving mathematics and to form a plan of action based on logic" www.sqa.org.ukUndertaking this qualification will allow you to study maths in real-life context, focusing on areas of finance, statistics, data management, measurement and geometary.  The course is designed to develop candidates mathematical reasoning skills in areas relevant to learning, life and work.PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS COURSE IS NOW CLOSED FOR THE 2023/24 ACADEMIC YEAR.

Learning outcome

This course provides students with opportunities to continue to acquire and develop the attributes and capabilities of the four capacities, as well as skills for learning, skills for life and skills for work.

SQA currently offer students a choice in the mathematics subject that they study.  Students who plan to go on to complete a higher in mathematics are advised to complete the National 5 Mathematics course that is offered in all schools.  However, students who do not plan to have a career that involves complex numerical calculations may benefit from studying the other maths offering known as Applications of Mathematics. 

This qualification is currently being accepted by the majority of universities as a valid alternative to National 5 Mathematics, which many have progressed onto full time courses such as nursing, primary teaching, social work etc.

Applicants wishing to progress to higher education should always check with their intended university of choice to ensure that they are choosing the correct course for them.

Entry requirements

Students would normally be expected to have attained the skills, knowledge and understanding required by the following or equivalent qualifications and/or experience:

  • National 4 Mathematics or Applications of Mathematics
 This course is open to applicants with no previous qualifications; however, an ability to work independently, and to Level 5 standard, is essential.
