Course description

You will learn Economics and Marketing, Business Communication Skills as well as Business Accounting, Human Resource Management, Customer Care, Managing People and Organisations, starting up a Business, Personal Development Planning and Research Skills and Business Fundamentals with Emerging Technologies, which is vital for the changing world of business.

This course gives you the opportunity to learn about the different sectors within the business industry and is designed to give you a broad understanding of the functions of business and a clear understanding of the business environment.  This course is equivalent to first year of degree study and we offer this course as a standalone HNC or as part of a three-year programme which will allow you to graduate with the University of West of Scotland Management degree which is also available on campus at Dumfries & Galloway College.By studying this programme, you will develop suitable competencies and industry knowledge to enhance an administrative, commercial, or managerial career. You will develop other relevant skills that employers value such as customer handling skills, meeting deadlines, attention to detail, personal target setting, enterprise and effectively dealing with clients, managing your own performance and that of others.This award will also include a Professional Development Award in Team Leadership and Management which meets the needs of individuals who wish to develop as managers or leaders within industry. Opportunities exist to enable learners to attend part-time on an individual subject basis.

Learning outcome

The HNC award will prepare candidates for entry to a wide range of positions including Administration Officer; Administration Supervisor; Assistant Manager; Business Development Assistant; Customer Service Coordinator; Finance Assistant; Purchasing Officer; Planning Officer; Sales Coordinator; Team Leader or Trainee Manager. The above positions are just some examples of a wider range of suitable posts.  The programme is also ideal for students who want to start their own business and require a broad grounding in business topics.

Successful completion will allow direct entry into HND Business which is equivalent to second year Degree programme.  If you are currently studying at the College, you will also require a positive Progressing Learner Reference.
