Course description

The course is structured around a selection of both knowledge and skills based practical motor vehicle engineering units together with a core skills programme involving communications, numeracy and information technology. The course involves the study of light vehicle construction and routine maintenance, operating principles of light vehicle engines, tyres, brakes, steering and suspension systems, transmission systems and electrical and electronic systems within structured practical workshop lessons and classroom theory.

This full time diploma course has been developed to provide a progression from the IMI Certificate in Vehicle Maintenance award.The programme also offers a standardised approach to learning and assessment of the underpinning knowledge required for the Modern Apprenticeship and satisfies all the requirements of the Motor Industry Training Councils (MITC) and national standards. The diploma course offers you a full time course that gives you an enhanced knowledge and understanding of light vehicle maintenance and repair, building on the prior learning from year one of the IMI Certificate course.

Learning outcome

Employment as a Modern Apprentice in the Motor Vehicle Industry.

Progression to higher level full time programmes of study or a recognised Modern Apprenticeship in the motor vehicle industry.

Entry requirements

Successful completion of the IMI Certificate in Vehicle Maintenance Award or 3 National 4s ; preferably in Maths, English and/or a Science subject. You will be required to attend an Information and Interview Session before commencement of the course.  During this session applicants may need to provide evidence that they meet the entry criteria for the course or complete an on-line core skills profile assessment. If you are currently studying at the College, you will also require a positive Progressing Learner Reference
