Course description
This course is a mandatory requirement for those seeking to become an Able Seaman or an officer of the watch (deck/engine), and provides candidates with the required deck seamanship skills and ship knowledge prior to stepping on board.
The STCW MCA Approved course provides a mixture of interactive classroom learning and practical hands-on training with the use of its fully equipped seamanship workshops here at the City of Glasgow College.
This training programme is designed in accordance with the revised STCW Code and complies with the latest UK Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) / Merchant Navy Training Board (MNTB) requirements.
Entry requirements
Learners should be a minimum of 17 years and hold either:
- An MCA accepted Yachtmaster (Offshore or Coastal); or
- A Yacht Rating with a steering certificate or an NWR Certificate; or
- A Boatmaster Licence (BML) Tier 1 level 2 certificate; or
- A Tug rating with a steering certificate or an NWR Certificate; or
- A UK Class 1 and 2 Fishing Certificates of Competency (Deck or Engineering); or
- A Seafish Fishing 16.5m Skippers Certificate (with evidence of at least 6 months of seagoing service).
Note 1: Before an EDH certificate can be issued, a minimum of six months of seagoing service in vessels of 15m or more is required. Seagoing service in category C and D waters will be accepted at full rate.
Note 2: Entrants may also be deck cadets undertaking an MCA approved training programme.
