Course description

This 2-day course will allow you to gain entry level knowledge, understanding and certification around general health & safety that can be put into practice in any workplace, with the added bonus of the certificates being transferable across all sectors. Undertaking this course will increase your employment opportunities as having a general understanding of health & safety no matter what sector you wish to apply for employment in, is always a desirable ask from employers. Having these nationally recognised certificates will allow you to widen your job search or move between sectors with the certification remaining relevant without you having to re-train, and this would be a positive addition to your CV to put forward to any employer. If you are in already in employment and wish to expand your knowledge of Health & Safety to progress to a promoted post / new job then you can consider this course as an upskilling opportunity, as it is an ideal starting point. Once you have completed this course you can consider further progression by undertaking higher level qualifications in each subject specific area, for example progressing to Qualsafe Level 2 Fire Safety, Qualsafe Level 2 in Health & Safety, Qualsafe Emergency First Aid at Work or 3 Day First Aid at Work. The course comprises of 4 modules; • Qualsafe Level 2 Award in Principles of Manual Handling (RQF) • Qualsafe Level 1 Fire Safety Awareness (RQF) • Qualsafe Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in the Workplace (RQF) • HSC Futures Ltd Basic First Aid. COURSE CONTENT: Day 1 (am) Qualsafe Level 1 FIRE SAFETY AWARENESS (RQF) This is a regulated and nationally recognised qualification designed for individuals who want to increase their awareness of fire safety in the workplace. Candidates will learn basic fire safety principles in order to ensure they are keeping themselves and others in the workplace safe at all times. They will also learn what to do in the event of an emergency and the simple measures that can be taken to control the risk of fires. Topics include: • Causes of fires in the workplace • The costs of fires in the workplace for employers, employees and society • Basic fire safety duties and responsibilities • Actions to be taken in the event of a fire • Principles of fire risk control • Key elements for effective fire risk management • The fire triangle and controlling fire risks • Fire risk control measures • Fire prevention measures • Safe use of portable fire-fighting equipment • Fire safety equipment checks Day 1 (pm) Qualsafe Level 1 AWARD IN H&S IN THE WORKPLACE (RQF) This is a regulated and nationally recognised qualification providing sufficient information, instruction and training to individuals to allow them to work in a way that does not put themselves or others at risk. It has been specifically designed to provide candidates with a basic introduction to workplace health and safety. It is suitable for all individuals who wish to work in a range of environments. Topics covered include: • Health and Safety roles and responsibilities • The importance of health and safety in a workplace • Workplace hazards and risks: o slips, trips and falls o working at heights o manual handling o hazardous substances o machinery and vehicles o electricity, fire o stress • Health and safety signage • Personal Protective Equipment and its uses • Importance of personal hygiene • The purpose of first aid provision • The need for reporting incidents and ill health Day 2 (am) Qualsafe Level 2 AWARD IN PRINCIPLES OF MANUAL HANDLING (RQF) This is a regulated and nationally recognised qualification designed to cover the basic principles of manual handling. This theory-based qualification is ideal for all employees as it provides candidates with an awareness of safe manual handling practices and the risks of unsafe manual handling. Topics include: o Common manual handling injuries o Manual handling laws o Responsibilities of employers and employees o Risk assessments o Safe movement principles associated with manual handling, including the body’s: • Musculoskeletal system • Centre of gravity • Lever system o Theory of safe manual handling principles, including: • Preparing for a lift • Solo lifting, carrying and lowering an object • Team manual handling o Manual handling equipment: • Types of manual handling aids and equipment • Maintenance and requirements for testing Day 2 (pm) Basic First Aid This basic first aid course covers the fundamentals of first aid. Topics include: o Basic first aid procedures to follow in the event of illness or injury to an individual o What First Aid is o What your responsibilities are in respect of First Aid o What your priorities are in respect of First Aid o How to identify and deal with a variety of situations and conditions appropriately QUALIFICATION GAINED • Qualsafe Level 1 FIRE SAFETY AWARENESS (RQF) • Qualsafe Level 1 AWARD IN H&S IN THE WORKPLACE (RQF) • Qualsafe Level 2 AWARD IN PRINCIPLES OF MANUAL HANDLING (RQF) - OBJECTS • HSC FUTURES LTD – BASIC FIRST AID SCQF LEVEL: N/A ATTENDANCE: Short course - Flexible start dates.
