Course description

Farming, fishing, food and drink is Scotlands most valuable industry, recognised at home and abroad as a model of collaboration and a world leader in responsible, profitable growth. Scotland Food and Drink have collaborated with industry professionals and the Scottish Government to make the Food and Drinks industry one of its most profitable sectors targeting a 30 billion growth by 2030. This combined with the trend during the Covid Pandemic for consumers to start buying more local produce is opening opportunities for food producers across Scotland.

The NPA in Local Food Production at SCQF level 6 gives learners the opportunity to explore how they can be a part of this ambition. The course covers routes to market, product development, added value, marketing, and legal requirements, and explores issues surrounding local and global food production and consumption, environmental issues, food security and sustainability.

It investigates how the food we eat is produced and to contrast global food markets with food produced and consumed locally. As well as the qualification being delivered by subject specialists, candidates will have the opportunity to learn from established local industry professionals, and will be given the opportunity to develop practical skills in Horticulture. They will also be given the tools to create a business plan which can be applied to future endeavours.

This is the time to be a part of this exciting, dynamic and growing industry and this qualification is the perfect place to start for anybody interested in taking their produce to market.
