Be inspiredMeet Abigail Colman. She studied HNC Childhood Practice and now works as an Early Years Practitioner. Dillan tells us why he recommends a career in Early Years, and why he loves going to work every day!Early years provision has changed significantly over the years. Today effective early childhood education experiences are recognised as playing a key role in future life chances and achievement. Meaningful play is an important element of early years courses, however there's also a significant amount of theory which increases with each level. So as well as having hands-on fun, be prepared for a lot of reading and writing too.

This course will help you gain the knowledge and understanding you'll need to work successfully in childcare. It will also develop your knowledge, practical skills and qualities for working with children. Here's just some of what you'll be doing: You'll explore the importance of play for children from birth to 16 years. You'll look at different types of play and activities, such as imaginative, creative, discovery, books and technology. You will develop skills to plan child-centered play experiences that will help them reach their full potential. You'll look at child development and health from birth to 16 years, including physical, emotional and social, cognitive and language development. You'll explore the factors which influence development, and also key indicators for wellbeing such as safe, healthy and active. You'll look and how to care for and feed babies and children up to 12 years, within an early education and childcare setting. You'll explore the different types of provision in the early education and childcare sector, including local authority nurseries and schools, voluntary playgroups and clubs, and private nurseries and independent schools. Develop skills & qualities for a career in this sector. You'll explore the different types of family in modern society and look at the rights that all children should have in relation to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. You'll also have the chance to: Get creative and make resources like a story box or apron. Have fun taking part and support 'Stay, play and learn' sessions for young children and families. Visit outdoor play settings, such as Eglinton Country Park, Dean Castle Country Park and Craigie Woods or an outdoor nursery.

Learning outcome

When you successfully complete this course, you'll have the choice of: Moving onto a Level 6 courses such as Early Learning and Childcare (Level 6)Seeking to start your career in the care sector as a 'support worker' in a range of Early Learning & Childcare settings.
