Course description

Are you interested in being a paramedic or a career in health care? We are offering for the first time a course that will give you an opportunity to progress to the degree in Paramedic Science at university. This programme is run in partnership with Scottish Wider Access Programme (SWAP)Our SWAP programmes are specifically designed to prepare adults with life experience who wish to return to education for advanced level study at college or university. Partnership links with universities provide a range of opportunities to progress to HNC or degree courses. The SWAP Access to Health and Paramedic is aimed at people who have been out of education for 5 years or more, who have little or no qualifications and who wish to become a Paramedic. It is not applicable for recent school leavers or graduates. Work or voluntary experience in the sector or a good range of developed transferable skills are desirable. This programme will be demanding, and applicants should also be ready to commit and study at a high level. You need to provide a comprehensive personal statement with your application which MUST include the following: Why you wish to study the access to Health and Paramedic course Details of any voluntary or work experience that are relevant to this programme The skills, characteristics, and qualities you have that would make you a good candidate for this programme. An interview for this programme will be essential.

Subjects you will study are: Human Body Human Development and Behaviour Care: Social Influences Numeracy Care in the Last Days of Life Care: Values & Principles First Aid Understanding Mental Health and Mental Illness Caring for People with Dementia Substance Use and Misuse: an Introduction Preparation for HE Student Profile Communication Microbiology Leadership in Practice Safeguarding People

Learning outcome

During the programme you will have the opportunity to apply for the Undergraduate Paramedic Science Degree at Glasgow Caledonian University, Stirling University and University of West of Scotland. These degrees are competitive, and you will be given support with your application, and with progressing to other opportunities in the health care sector. Successful students may also progress onto HNC Healthcare Practice, HNC Social Services, HNC Working with Communities or HNC Counselling.
