Course description

This course offers you a qualification in Performing Engineering Operations at NVQ Level 2. It will give you a good all-round introduction to engineering, as well as focusing specifically on wind turbine technology. It’s part theory, part practical. Here’s just some of what you’ll be doing: You’ll begin by exploring the theory and background of wind turbines and energy. You’ll be introduced to the four main wind turbine systems - electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and control and instrumentation. You’ll learn about the components of a wind turbine, and its basic functions and operations. You’ll look at the wind and renewables industry, along with aspects such as aerodynamics, meteorology and wind farms. You’ll then look in more detail at wind turbine systems technology and the four main systems, focusing on the operation and maintenance of each. You’ll spend a lot of time developing your practical skills in the workshop, such as: carrying out basic maintenance activities on electrical equipment and systems, and mechanical devices and equipment, including diagnosing faults wiring and testing electrical equipment and circuits, and also programmable controller based systems, such as PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers)assembling and testing fluid power systems, including hydraulic, pneumatic or vacuum systems Finally, back in the classroom, you’ll look at the relevant health and safety regulations; how to use technical information such as engineering drawings; and the skills you need to work effectively in an engineering post.

In this course you will have built transferable Essential Skills in meaningful contexts to help you become more effective in life, learning, and work. This could be communication, numeracy, ICT, working with others, and problem solving. When you successfully complete this course, you’ll have the choice of: Moving onto a relevant Level 7 course such as HNC Electrical Engineering or HNC Engineering Practice (Electrical)Seeking to start your career with employment as a Wind Turbine Technician.
