Course description
Construction is a huge industry covering housing, commercial premises (like shops, hotels or offices) and industrial buildings (like factories or warehouses). Within construction there are several key trades, including bricklaying, carpentry and joinery, and painting and decorating. Skilled tradesmen usually find themselves in high demand - from homeowners as well as industry - so if you invest in your abilities now, you could have a great future ahead! All our trades staff are highly skilled and experienced, and fully committed to sharing their expertise and knowledge with you. Ayrshire College is also recognised as a centre of excellence by the Construction Industry Training Board, so there’s no better place to come and learn a trade!
This course will give you a good foundation for becoming a skilled tradesperson. As you might expect, you’ll do loads of practical work, including painting and wallpapering. You’ll also do a bit of theory and will find out what you need to know to work successfully in the construction industry. We’ll help you develop your skills for employment, such as working as part of a team. You’ll begin with basic painting, and learn how to prepare and paint different surfaces. Then it’s onto fancier stuff and decorative treatments. You’ll learn how to produce bands and lines in paint, create brush effects and paint designs using free brushwork techniques. Next you’ll tackle paperhanging, and discover the tricks and top tips for a perfectly papered wall. You’ll learn how to prepare the surface properly, mix and apply paste, produce plumb lines, and cut and hang plain wallpapers. Once you’ve got that, you’ll move onto textured and patterned paper, and learn how to match and join it on walls and ceilings. Along the way, you’ll look at colour theories. You’ll discover how to mix and match colours, and develop an eye for producing both bold and subtle colour schemes. On the theory side of things, you’ll explore construction practices within the different trades, including how to produce construction drawings, work efficiently and store materials safely. You’ll also look at health and safety, such as risk assessment or working at height. You’ll learn basic ICT and how it can help on a day to day basis in construction – from searching online for materials to submitting electronic time sheets.Learning outcome
