Course description

Carpentry and Joinery is one of several trades which supports the massive industry known as construction - the building of houses, commercial premises (like shops, hotels or offices) and industrial premises (like factories or warehouses). Other trades within construction include bricklaying, and painting and decorating. Skilled tradespeople usually find themselves in high demand - from homeowners as well as industry - so if you invest in your abilities now, you could have a great future ahead! If you’d like to learn a trade, then this course is a great place to start. All our trades staff are highly skilled and experienced, and fully committed to sharing their expertise and knowledge with you. Ayrshire College is also recognised as a Centre of Excellence by the Construction Industry Training Board, so there really is no better place for men and women to come and learn a trade!

This course at SCQF Level 5 involves a range of practical tasks focussing on the skills you’ll need for a career in Carpentry and Joinery. As you might expect, you’ll do loads of practical work, but with a bit of theory too, so you can find out what you need to know to work successfully in this trade. To develop your skills in Carpentry & Joinery: You’ll start by learning and developing hands skills and use tools of the trade to form joints and complex frames. You’ll look at ‘marking out’ details for Carpentry and Joinery based items. You’ll learn to work from workshop drawings and other information, and to select the materials and tools you’ll need to manufacture a joinery item. You’ll use Woodworking Machines and Portable Power Tools The theory side includes; exploring more about the Construction industry and construction techniques for walls, floors and roofs. health and safety aspects relating to work in the Construction Industry

Learning outcome

In this course you will have built transferable / Essential Skills in meaningful contexts to help you become more effective in life, learning, and work. This could be communication, numeracy, ICT, working with others, and problem solving. When you successfully complete this course, you’ll have the choice of: Moving onto City & Guilds Diploma in Site Carpentry (SCQF Level 6)Seeking to start your career with a Carpentry and Joinery apprenticeship.

Entry requirements

For entry to this course, you should ideally have attained a minimum of a level 4 qualification in either Woodwork / Carpentry Joinery or be able to provide some form of suitable experience in this trade area. What you must have, is a real interest in construction and in particular, Carpentry and Joinery. You’ll also need to come in for interview and/or a practical entry test.
