Course description

This course is a mixture of extending your practical skills in the garage workshop and expanding your knowledge of the theory you'll need to work successfully in the motor industry. You'll keep developing your skills for employment or future self employment, such as communicating with customers or numeracy for preparing invoices. Building on the IMI Level 1 course, you’ll still focus on all vehicle related systems. You’ll dismantle, assess and replace components from systems such as the engine, transmission, chassis, electrical and also the vehicle body. You'll also learn more about modern vehicle electrics and auxiliaries, like air conditioning, in car entertainment systems and cameras for reversing. You'll develop your inspection skills too, learning how to check if a vehicle is road worthy and if it would pass its MOT. You'll learn more about working effectively and safely in an automotive environment, as well as materials and tools. You’ll build transferable Essential Skills in meaningful contexts to help you become more effective in life, learning, and work. This could be communication, numeracy, ICT, working with others, and problem solving.

Learning outcome

When you successfully complete this course, you'll have the choice of: Moving on to a relevant SCQF Level 6 course such as IMI Level 3 Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Seeking to start your career with a Modern Apprenticeship in a garage Using your transferable skills to move to another related industry.
