Course description

Scotland has a world-renowned reputation for engineering, and is at the cutting-edge of engineering developments. Engineers design, create, test and improve all sorts of products and processes. They have an impact on every aspect of modern living and enjoy exciting career opportunities in lots of different sectors, including space, aviation, transport, medicine, technology, food, fashion and construction. If you’ve got a logical and inquisitive mind, enjoy problem solving and are curious to know how things work, you’ve got it in you to make a great engineer! Right now, qualified engineers are in extremely high demand, with thousands of new engineers needed every year in Scotland alone. We have STEM Assured Status which means we have been recognised for the quality of our Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths courses. We’ve invested in our equipment, so you’ll be learning using the latest industry standard technology. We won Training Partner of the Year at the prestigious SEMTA (Science, Engineering and Manufacturing Technologies Alliance) Skills Awards in 2017. We’ve also got an excellent record of employment for our engineering students.

This is an industry led course which supports the apprenticeship scheme and is SECTT (Scottish Electrical Charitable Training Trust) approved and sponsored. All the units are relevant to the work required of a first year apprentice and on successful completion, you’ll have the opportunity to sit the SECTT entrance exam. It’s a mixture of practical hand skills and theory, and you’ll work in an environment which simulates a real life workplace. Here’s just some of what you’ll be doing: You’ll begin by learning about electrical principles and basic electrical concepts, including magnetic and electromagnetic theory. You’ll also look at fundamental electrical systems, including High Voltage (HV) generators. You’ll look at the basic electrical circuit elements of resistance, self inductance, mutual inductance and capacitance. You’ll learn about cable ratings and the dangers of overcurrent in a circuit, including the current capacity of cables and overcurrent protection devices. You’ll look at earthing and the different methods of earth fault current protection. You’ll develop skills in installing PVC sheathed wiring systems, and learn how to fabricate and install trunking systems. You’ll learn about Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) and develop skills to create a programme to control typical industrial related processes. You’ll develop skills in using electrical test equipment, and learn how to make correct and safe measurements in electrical circuits and installations. You’ll study maths in an engineering context and develop your IT skills, learning to use software packages relevant to engineering. Finally, you’ll look at health and safety within the construction industry as a whole, including hazards, risk assessment procedures and safe working practices.
