Course description

Engineers design, create, test and improve all sorts of products and processes. They have an impact on every aspect of modern living and enjoy exciting career opportunities in lots of different sectors, including space, aviation, transport, medicine, technology, food, fashion and construction. If you've got a logical and inquisitive mind, enjoy problem solving and are curious to know how things work, you've got it in you to make a great engineer! Right now, qualified engineers are in extremely high demand, with thousands of new engineers needed every year. We've invested in our equipment, so you'll be learning using the latest industry standard technology. We won Training Partner of the Year at the prestigious SEMTA Skills Awards, 2017. Our mechanical engineering courses have been approved by the Institute of Mechanical Engineers. We've also got an excellent record of employment for our engineering students.

The HNC Mechanical Engineering course is designed to develop a wide range of knowledge, skills and experience across a wide range of Engineering subjects and laboratory experiments. This one-year course has been designed in partnership with the University of Glasgow to allow successful students to progress on to Year 2 of selected degree programmes within the University’s School of Engineering. There will also be classes at Glasgow University to prepare you for transition to second year entry. You will build up an excellent understanding of a broad range of engineering concepts and skills, including: • Engineering Mathematics• Thermofluids• Engineering Principles• Statics and Strength of Materials• Dynamics• Pneumatics & Hydraulics• AC & DC Principles• Materials Selection• Computer Aided Draughting• Graded Unit This is a 17 credit HNC. Some of the units are assessed in a single exam upon completion of teaching. • Towards the end of the year, you will undertake a Graded Unit 1 exam• All units are graded as Pass/Fail other than the Graded Unit which is graded A, B, C or Fail. You will also learn to perform a range of experimental laboratories essential for industry and academia. As part of the course, in addition to being an Ayrshire college student, you will also be enrolled as a University of Glasgow student, attending sessions run at the University of Glasgow campus throughout the HNC year.  

Learning outcome

Successful students will then be able to articulate directly into Year 2 of full-time study at the University of Glasgow in September 2022 - thus completing their undergraduate degree within four years (or five if progressing on to the MEng). The college will support you in your completion of a UCAS application for 2nd year entry in one of the following degree programmes: Aeronautical Engineering, Aerospace Systems, Biomedical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electronics and Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Design Engineering, Mechanical Engineering with Aeronautics, and Mechatronics. Progression to 2nd year is dependent upon successful completion of the course (pass all units and achieve A pass in the Graded Unit exam and UCAS application.
