Course description

Every type of business and organisation needs people with administration and IT skills to help it run efficiently. This ranges from small specialist firms to large national companies and government organisations like local councils or the NHS. There are also many different roles available, so if you invest in some good admin and IT skills now, you could have a great future ahead! If you’d like to work in administration or IT, then this course can help set you up for a great career.

This course will develop your existing skills and introduce new ones to make you highly employable in an admin or IT role. By this level, your IT and computer skills will already be high, but now you’re going to take them even further, focussing on advanced word processing, spreadsheets and databases. You’ll explore ICT in business, including data communication systems, project management software and software for presentations. You’ll learn about office management and gain valuable skills for organising an admin environment effectively, such as decision making, delegation, leadership and recruitment. You’ll also look at how to develop individuals within a team for efficient working together. You’ll look at the important role of marketing and how to develop the right marketing mix for products and services. You’ll learn about market research, segmentation and targeting, and making effective marketing decisions. You’ll gain skills in Desk Top Publishing (DTP), learning how to produce various types of material such as leaflets and posters. You’ll look at business strategy and culture, including developing strategies for success, company values and ethics, and how to manage to change within an organisation. Finally, you’ll have the chance to: &Visit local businesses, such as hotels, tourist attractions or accounting firms to see how they operate. &Meet local business employers who’ll give you their top tips for successful interviews and tell you the key skills they look for when recruiting new employees. &Take part in enterprising activities, such as raising funds for charity and good causes. Some students may also have the opportunity to: &Go on placements or volunteer to work on a real project for a local business. &Secure part time or summer jobs via our links with local employers.

Learning outcome

When you successfully complete this course, you may have the choice of: Moving onto a degree course at university, such as BA Business Management at UWS or GCU (direct entry to year 3) or a BA in Rural Business Management at SRUC (direct entry to year 3). Please check with each University for their articulation requirements prior to your UCAS application. Entry is subject to availability of places and meeting entry requirements, other options may also be available. Seeking to start your career in business. Entry requirements

For entry to this course you’ll need: An HNC Administration and IT with a minimum of 15 credits; An interview with us. If you don’t have formal qualifications, but have previous employment, practical or life experience, then we’ll also consider you for a place, so please call us for a chat.
