Course description

This course offers a great introduction to holistic therapies, helping you to develop a toolkit to promote health and wellbeing. With the emphasis on practical skills, you’ll spend a lot of time training in our own commercial salons, providing treatments to external clients. You’ll also cover several theory aspects, to give you essential knowledge and understanding. Due to Wellness and Complementary therapies being such a fast-changing industry, our aim is always to ensure that your course develops the current skills and knowledge required for positive progression, therefore some of what you study on the course may change. Here’s just some of the units you may study: Healthy eating and wellbeing - you’ll explore what’s involved in a healthy balanced diet and lifestyle. You’ll use your knowledge to advise clients on how to improve and maintain their health and wellbeing, from detoxing to exercising. Massage - you’ll learn how to perform individualised massages on the body, face, and scalp, neck and shoulders. You’ll use a range of techniques for different treatment plans. Managing stress - you’ll look at what cause stress and how this affects the body. You’ll develop skills in stress management strategies, such as visualisation, breathing techniques and relaxation. Natural products - you’ll investigate how natural ingredients can be used to treat minor ailments, help seasonal allergies and benefit everyday skincare. Investigation - you’ll develop skills in researching a range of Wellness therapies, such as acupuncture, aromatherapy, reflexology, floatation and hydrotherapy. You’ll also look at body structures/systems, and how complementary treatments can benefit how they function. First Aid - you’ll learn how to administer basic first aid in the Salon.

Learning outcome

You’ll also have the opportunity to develop your skills through: Hearing from industry speakers Volunteering in the community such as Women’s Aid Helping at promotional events, like campus wellbeing days. In this course you will have built transferable Essential Skills in meaningful contexts to help you become more effective in life, learning, and work. This could be communication, numeracy, ICT, working with others, and problem solving. When you successfully complete this course, you’ll have the choice of: Wellness and Complementary Therapies level 7/8 Exploring your future career options which could include: Self-Employed Holistic Therapist within a salon or spa, Holistic Therapist within a Spa or an Holistic Clinical Practitioner.

Entry requirements

For entry to this course you'll need: A real interest in health and wellbeing. To be over 16. Four National 5's or equivalent or a relevant qualification at SCQF Level 5 or equivalent. To submit an application, completing all sections, including Personal Statement in full. NB we may notify you of the outcome by letter and/or invite you to attend an interview. If you don't have formal qualifications, but have life experience, then well also consider you for a place. Wellness is the active pursuit of activities, choices, and lifestyles that lead to a state of holistic health. Wellness and Complementary therapies can promote physical and mental well-being: to support the physical, emotional, and mental health of individuals and communities. Wellness, complementary and holistic therapeutic approaches have become extremely popular in the UK for supporting health and well-being, including massage and other holistic therapies. This can simply be an indulgent treatment experience at a spa or salon. However, it can also be used in the support and management of an individual coping with health issues and stress management. If you want to learn and explore techniques for developing and promoting a healthy lifestyle and helping others, then this course is an ideal starting point.
