Course description

This course builds on the HNC, further developing the skills you’ll need to become a graphic designer or illustrator. Here’s just some of what you’ll be doing: Learning how to design logos and Apps, creating visuals which combine graphic design, illustration, photography and animation Animation - designing and animating characters and visuals for App designs and motion graphics. Typography - learning how to use the most impactful typefaces in your designs Illustration Project - mastering your drawing skills using a variety of styles. Web design - planning, designing and implementing your own online project (possibly your own portfolio website to showcase your art work) which will be tested and published. Printmaking - working through the entire process, from concept through preparing plates, stencils or screens and inks, to producing professional quality print in multiple layers. You may also have the chance to: Work on lots of live briefs for local businesses, community projects or events, such as Tam Fest, Christmas banners for Ayr High Street, a poster for a national Stalking Awareness campaign or illustrating a children’s booklet for Culzean Castle. Take part in national competitions such as a logo design for Hospitality Industry Trust (HIT) Scotland. Work with local artists, such as taking part in a digital art project with Billy McCall. Exhibit your work, including external venues like Mclaurin Art Gallery at Rozelle House. Be involved in the Creative Department’s Annual End of Year Show. Possibly go on work experience placements e. g. in marketing.

Learning outcome

When you successfully complete this course, you may have the choice of: Moving onto BA Digital Art and Design at UWS (Year 3)Moving onto a degree course at e. g. Glasgow School or Art, Edinburgh School of Art, Duncan of Jordanstone in Dundee, Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen, Edinburgh Napier University or Perth College.
