Course description

Learning resources are all around us. Unfortunately, they sometimes go unused. As a student, you have access to learning resources that have the potential to improve your immediate academic results and strengthen your knowledge and skills to support future success. Unfortunately, learning resources don’t always receive as much attention as they deserve. You can change this and benefit from them by taking this course.

Gain an in-depth understanding of the wide range of learning resources available to support your academic success and achieve your best results with these widely implemented foundational learning processes. In addition, you will encounter graphic and procedural resources for vocabulary building. You will examine the process of brainstorming by drawing on prior knowledge and learn the advantages of self-generated questions. This will guide your learning and teach you how to integrate all this effectively using the ‘Know, Want, Learn and How’ (‘K-W-L-H’) resource.

You will discover the power of social interactions to support your learning. Study buddies, study groups, informal discussion groups and cooperative and collaborative learning processes offer you significant benefits. Furthermore, you will learn the importance of seminars and symposia and understand how university-based resources, such as the syllabus and learning management system, can help you succeed. We will also introduce you to unique digital resources available through the library, such as ‘Open Educational Resources’ and ‘Highwire’.

If you are determined to raise your academic achievement, this course will show you how. You have access to many resources as a student but you must understand how to take advantage of them. This course will give you a better understanding of the resources available and how to use them to your benefit. You owe it to yourself to get the best return for your time, money and effort.
