Child neglect is one of the most common forms of abuse. This course lays out the many types of child neglect and shows you how to identify its signs. We explain why parents or caregivers might neglect children and provide examples of child neglect cases. ‘Child neglect’ is the persistent failure of a parent or caregiver to provide basic needs for a child, resulting in serious harm. Did you know that one in ten children in the UK experiences suffering borne of carelessness? This course outlines the causes of child neglect to help you to provide appropriate responses to the issue. We break down the physical, behavioural and environmental signs of neglect and explain how to assess the risk factors at the parent, family and community levels to discover why it is occurring.

We then examine the effects of child neglect and provide measures that help protect children against maltreatment. We discuss some child neglect cases to help you develop a better understanding of these measures and how to apply them in real life. The course equips you with the competence to implement the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and the UK legislation to combat neglect. We also identify the UK authorities responsible for child protection.

Finally, the course explains how to report and respond to child neglect concerns. We lay out the categories of prevention measures and discuss the importance of public awareness of the dangers of child neglect and the responsibility of schools, families and the public.
