‘Child neglect’ is the persistent failure of a parent or caregiver to provide basic needs for a child, resulting in serious harm. This course outlines the causes of child neglect to help you to provide appropriate responses to the issue. We break down the physical, behavioural and environmental signs of neglect and explain how to assess the risk factors at the parent, family and community levels to discover why it is occurring.

We then examine the effects of child neglect and provide measures that help protect children against maltreatment. We discuss some child neglect cases to help you develop a better understanding of these measures and how to apply them in real life. The course equips you with the competence to implement the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and the UK legislation to combat neglect. We also identify the UK authorities responsible for child protection.

Finally, the course explains how to report and respond to child neglect concerns.
