Course description

Learn while you work with Modern Apprenticeships (MAs) and Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs). Modern apprenticeships in Scotland are available for people who are aged over 16 and in employment. With on-the-job training and regular meetings in the workplace you can gain a recognised qualification without studying full-time.  Funding for MAs can be gained from Skills Development Scotland. This qualification is designed for students currently employed as technicians within the mechanical repair industry and is certificated through the Institute of the Motor Industry.  The course is delivered over 3 years on a block release basis and is a recognised qualification within the industry.  We work closely with a number of employers to provide opportunities for young people to find employment.  These close employer links, built through collaboration between industry and college staff, have helpded young people to complete their studies. This qualification is a progression route for students studying on college based full-time courses and proves to be a success for students wishing to attain an apprenticeship in the sector.  Students are visited in their workplace by college assessing staff to collect evidence and build a portfolio of work based activity which satisfies the Level 3 requirement of the award.  Evidence is collected by a number of visits per year which enables the candidate to complete the award with the advice and support of the assessor which helps the student and company to set realistic goals and targets.  UHI Perth have an excellent attainment and achievement rate and are fully committed to work with businesses and young people to fulfil their potential and aspirations in the vehicle body repair industry. The course covers a number of units specifically designed to develop the students' knowledge and practical skills in such areas a fuel systems, engine diagnostics, transmissions and other relevant units which are included in the repair of vehicles in the modern repair industry.  Exams are completed through an online system which includes a series of multiple choice questions which are designed to test the students knowledge of individual units.  These exams are scheduled on completion of each unit and once the exams and practical elements have been completed the student is certificated. The modern apprentice route also has a requirement of core skills.
