1. Decide what job you want
If you have a career idea, you can still narrow what you're looking for by thinking about:
- the type of workplace that suits you
- hours and working patterns you want
- where you can travel and remote options
It's also worth exploring related careers to open up more opportunities.
Not sure what you want to do? Our job profiles allow you to learn about different careers, including how to get into them. We've also got lots of information about how the job market looks for different careers across Scotland.
2. Plan your job search
Take as much stress out of the process as possible by being prepared. Make sure you've got a way to track what you've applied for, applications you're working on and upcoming interviews.
Set aside regular timeslots each week to search and apply for jobs. Treat it like an important appointment and build it into your routine.
Some job websites offer alerts that let you know about new vacancies that match your interests. Setting up alerts is a great way to avoid missing opportunities.
3. Where to find jobs
Job search websites
Our job search brings together thousands of vacancies from a variety of sources including other popular job boards. You may also want to explore specialist job websites for particular industries or sectors.
Search using keywords that match your interests such as job titles, employers, industries or skills.
Employer websites
Make a list of organisations you'd like to work for and check their websites regularly for jobs.
Consider getting in touch to ask about future vacancies, work experience or other opportunities.
Recruitment agencies
These agencies help employers find good matches for their job openings. Some recruitment agencies focus on particular industries, while others specialise in local opportunities.
Drop them an introductory email and copy of your CV.
Job fairs and careers events
Job fairs give you a chance to meet employers face-to-face and discover opportunities. You may find out about industries and careers you have not considered.
Networking to find jobs
Networking can sound scary but it doesn’t need to be. It just means reaching out to people who may be able to help you find work. That could be family, friends, past colleagues or even people you know from social media.
Widen your network using sites like LinkedIn – we can show you how. Use your account to connect with people in jobs, companies or industries you're interested in.

4. Tailor your job applications
Avoid using the same cover letter or writing the same things in every application. Employers want to understand why you're right for their role.
Read the job advert carefully and make sure your application shows how your skills and experience match what they're looking for.

Every application and interview can help you learn something useful.
If you're not getting results, consider ways to improve your chances such as:

- getting support from a careers adviser
