Introduce your pupils to the different routes they can take to a career with our lesson plans.

Aimed at S1 to S3, the Widening Access – Early Secondary Programme will encourage your pupils to think about the different education and career options open to them. This includes higher and further education and apprenticeships.

The lessons will help pupils to make informed subject choices and understand how subjects connect to post-school work and study.

The lessons:

  • have been developed in partnership with Skills Development Scotland (SDS) and the University of Glasgow Widening Participation team
  • have been developed in consultation with school teachers
  • are linked to Career Management Skills, Curriculum for Excellence Experiences and Outcomes and the Career Education Standard
  • include lesson plans, teacher guidance notes, presentations, handouts and suggested follow-up activities

Lesson 1 – What can I do when I leave school?

Learning intention

  • I will be able to identify different jobs in different industries and be able to find out more information about these using My World of Work.

Success criteria

  • I can identify the different jobs available in different industries.
  • I know where to look for more information about different jobs.

Lesson 2 – What is their job and how do I get there?

Learning intention

I know that for different jobs there are different qualifications and can identify these.

  • I can identify the skills that I possess and how these can help me in my learner journey.
