Hutton's Lost Drawings Competition
Hutton’s Lost Drawings Competition invites pupils to explore the work of James Hutton, the renowned Scottish scientist who transformed how we understand the Earth and was a founding member of the RSE. To mark 300 years since his birth, pupils are encouraged to take inspiration from Hutton’s interdisciplinary approach and imagine the future of our world.
Using the template provided, pupils are asked to create:
- A drawing of what they think the world might look like 300 years from now.
- A short written explanation describing their ideas.
- Submission deadline: Monday 25 May 2026
- Winners will be announced: Wednesday 3 June 2026
How to take part:
Entries must be submitted with a completed cover sheet signed by a teacher, parent, or carer and can be sent by post to, RSE 22-26 George St, Edinburgh EH2 2PQ
or by email to schools@therse.org.uk. Full details and the downloadable competition pack and supporting PowerPoint resources are available on our website.

Prizes:
Winning pupils will each receive three tickets to visit Dynamic Earth, and the winning school will receive a £100 Cass Art voucher for classroom art supplies.
