As a residential childcare practitioner, you’ll provide the support, care and guidance young people need to thrive. Working in a children’s home or other residential setting, you’ll provide a safe, stable and nurturing environment.
This role’s about more than simply guiding young people through their daily routine. You’ll also build trusting relationships, be a good listener and organise fun activities. Most importantly, you’ll be someone each child can rely on when things get tough.
The children you care for may have experienced trauma, loss, abuse or neglect. Some might have additional needs or challenges that mean they’re unable to be cared for safely in a family home.
Alongside your team – including social workers, health professionals and youth workers – you’ll create a loving, stable home where young people feel supported.
Your tasks might include:
providing day-to-day care and assistance – this can include helping young people prepare meals, get ready for school or carry out chores
building trusting relationships with young people and being someone they can rely on
supporting young people as they manage emotions, build confidence, develop coping strategies and work through challenges
organising activities that encourage learning, creativity, social skills, confidence and wellbeing
managing challenging behaviour when young people become distressed
following child protection procedures to keep young people safe and responding appropriately to any concerns or risks

Most people have an SVQ in Social Services (Children and Young People). You can gain this through a Modern Apprenticeship, but most employers will also help you achieve it alongside your job.

Apprenticeship
Modern Apprenticeships (MAs) mean you learn on the job. You get paid and work towards a qualification at the same time.
You might want to consider an MA in Social Services (Children and Young People). An SVQ in Social Services (Children and Young People) is included in this apprenticeship framework.
College
Getting qualifications at college, such as an HNC or HND, could help you find a job. Useful subjects include:
