What it's like
Gas service technicians keep homes and businesses safe by installing, maintaining and repairing gas appliances and systems. You'll work with a range of equipment, from boilers to cookers, making sure everything runs smoothly and safely.
You'll often be out and about, visiting different sites and meeting new people every day. It's rewarding to know your work helps prevent accidents and keeps essential services running.
You might be fixing a faulty boiler, carrying out routine safety checks or installing a new gas fire. The role is found in industries such as utilities, construction, facilities management and housing. Some technicians specialise in areas like central heating, commercial catering equipment or gas safety inspections.
You'll deal with customers directly in their own homes, so you'll be polite and friendly. You'll also give customers quotes for jobs and tell them how long it'll take. You could sell additional company services and occasionally deal with complaints.
Your tasks might include:
checking and testing gas appliances for safety and efficiency
installing new boilers, heaters or gas fires in homes and businesses
diagnosing faults and repairing gas leaks or faulty equipment
carrying out routine maintenance and servicing on gas systems
advising customers on energy efficiency and safe appliance use
keeping accurate records of work done and parts used

advise customers on reducing energy use and carbon emissions

Hours
You'll usually work Monday to Friday.
You may need to work on a rota if your employer provides 24-hour emergency cover.
Occasionally, you'll work evenings or weekends to respond to urgent call-outs.

Environment
You’ll travel between homes, businesses and sometimes larger industrial sites, working both indoors and outdoors.
Expect to work in a range of settings, from modern flats and offices to older buildings, sometimes accessing lofts or rooftops.

Travel
You'll travel to each job and need a full UK driving licence to transport your equipment.
